What Etsy changed, and how to show buyers the work you did.

On Oct 22, 2026, Etsy banned AI-generated functional guides and tightened its other AI rules. Buyers everywhere are asking the question Etsy is now asking: did a person actually make this, and does it work?

If you make kits, templates or guides and use AI somewhere along the way, you can answer that question. You just have to show your work.

What Etsy changed on Oct 22, 2026

Etsy announced the changes in its Seller Handbook article Important updates to AI use on Etsy, dated Oct 22, 2026. These rules apply to Etsy listings.

Etsy gave its reason up front: "Today, many active buyers say they can't tell which items involve AI-generated content. It's become a top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy."

Here's what changed, in Etsy's words.

  1. One photo has to be untouched. "Your listing must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, meaning the photo hasn't been edited or changed in any way. Some exceptions may apply depending on the types of items you sell."
  2. Every photo has to be accurate. "All of your photos must accurately represent the item a buyer will receive, without hiding flaws or damage or making the item appear different."
  3. Functional guides have to be your own work. "If you sell functional guides like patterns, recipes, or instructions, the information buyers rely on to create or use your item must be your own work, not generated by AI." You'll "also need to show an actual result made using your instructions, not an AI-generated or simulated result, so buyers know what to expect."
  4. Bot-made listings are out. "Bot-generated listings without any human involvement aren't allowed. These listings will be removed and may also result in your shop being removed from Etsy."
  5. Refunds can land on you. "If your listing doesn't meet our updated image requirements, and a buyer opens a case because the item they received is materially different from your listing, you may be responsible for refunding the buyer."

Etsy also says it's adding guidance to the listing form when it detects AI-generated images, and that sellers can appeal removed listings.

What's still allowed

CNBC reports that Etsy will keep allowing AI-generated art as long as sellers "play a clear role in what they create and are transparent about the process" (CNBC). Disclosure is still required. CNBC quotes Etsy: "Sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI and cannot misrepresent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own creation."

Photo editing is also still allowed. Outside the one required unedited photo, Etsy says "you can still use photo-editing tools, including AI, to adjust lighting or color, crop or resize images, or change backgrounds" (Etsy Seller Handbook). Its suggested practice: "If you use AI to edit any of your listing photos, note whether images were edited in your listing description."

One more line from Etsy's AI policy page is worth knowing: "we prohibit the sale of AI prompt bundles on Etsy," meaning prompts sold without the finished artwork (What is Etsy's stance on AI creations?).

Is your kit a "functional guide"?

Etsy's AI policy page calls these functional instructions and defines them as "content whose primary purpose is to instruct a buyer how to make, prepare, build, repair, use, or otherwise complete a specific task or achieve a specific result." Its examples are craft patterns, recipes, project plans, instruction or assembly manuals, and instructional guides or e-books. The same page says: "AI-generated functional instructions are not allowed on Etsy."

Here's Kit&File's reading, and it's only a reading. If a buyer follows your kit step by step to get a result, treat it as a functional guide. When you're unsure, read Etsy's policy page or ask Etsy. This isn't legal advice.

If your kit is step-by-step by design, plan for that.

Show the human work: a trust checklist for any store

This section is Kit&File's view. Etsy's rules bind Etsy listings only. The buyer's question travels to every store, so these steps apply wherever you sell.

  1. Say what you made and what AI helped with, in one or two plain sentences on the listing.
  2. Show a real result made by following your own instructions.
  3. Offer a free preview of real pages. How to Write a Sales Page for a Digital Kit covers where it goes.
  4. List every file buyers get, with page counts.
  5. Test the steps yourself before you sell them, and fix what breaks.
  6. Fact-check any AI-drafted claims before they go in the kit. Use How to Edit Your Own Writing: A Revision Checklist.
  7. Make the delivery email match the listing. See How to Write the Delivery Email for a Digital Kit.

Show the work. Then sell it.

What not to do

  • Don't call AI-generated work handmade or entirely your own.
  • Don't post an AI-simulated "result" of your instructions.
  • Don't automate listings with no human review.
  • Don't hide AI edits in your photos.

Each of these breaks an Etsy rule on Etsy. Anywhere else, each one breaks the buyer's trust the first time they notice.

Put the guide to work

If you want buyers to know exactly what's inside before they pay, the Digital Product Workbench ($39) walks you through packaging a kit. Its own page lists the files and has a free preview PDF.

If AI drafts part of your copy, the Precision Editing Kit ($24) is for "writers and professionals who want tighter drafts without sanding away their voice." Both are individual kits, so both come with Kit&File's 30-day money-back guarantee. Bundles and services aren't covered.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Did Etsy ban AI products?

Not all of them. On Oct 22, 2026, Etsy banned AI-generated functional guides and fully bot-generated listings. AI-assisted items are still allowed if the seller plays a clear role and discloses the AI use.

What is a functional guide on Etsy?

Content whose main purpose is to instruct a buyer how to make, prepare, build, repair or use something. Etsy lists craft patterns, recipes, project plans, manuals and instructional guides or e-books.

Can I use AI to edit my listing photos?

Yes, for lighting, color, cropping or backgrounds, but every photo must accurately show the item. Etsy also requires at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, with some exceptions by item type.

Do I have to disclose AI on Etsy?

Yes. Etsy says sellers must disclose when an item is created using AI and can't present AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own.

Can I sell AI prompt bundles on Etsy?

No. Etsy's AI policy prohibits selling AI prompt bundles separately from the finished artwork.

I sell on my own store. What should I do?

Etsy's rules stop at Etsy. Buyers ask the same question everywhere. Say what you made and what AI helped with, show a real result, offer a preview, and list every file.
